19th May - Short Race Series

Sunday morning saw an easterly breeze blowing of Gantheaume Point beach looking very promising, but as midday and race time loomed, winds began to lighten and the sky over Coconut Wells darken.  We watched rain out at sea as we sailed to the start with Phil Aagren, John Kennedy and Stan Best on start and safety ribs.  Four boats at the start line, course set, dark clouds overhead and wind about 20metres away at the time of start.  Loi who had made a great start, didn't quite allow enough for the tide and drifted back on to the start boat, necessitating a 360 degree around one end of the start line.

Within minutes of the start, the two cats were on their side.  the sudden gust of wind caught them unawares. The Impulse of John and the MG14 of Gary shot of towards the first mark.  The wind was up and down in strength and all over the place in direction as the northerly atempted to take over the easterly.

First around the mark was the Impulse of John, with Gary having jammed a new main sheet system, not allowing him to ease his sails.  Meanwhile the two cats drifted, awaiting righting assistance - it takes two to get a big cat up after it goes over.  With wind and rain and then all wind almost stopped as the storm blew over.

Out the other end of it was the lonesome Impulse who in just over 44 minutes completed the first triangle of the course.  Unfortunately, there was no start finish boat there as it was off still assisting the cats and making sure all were safe. John says "on almost every leg of the course the wind swung to every direction.  It was the challenge that made John keep going and as long as he maintained some speed, he thought it worth the battle.  John's speed varied between .6knot and 3knots over the entire course after the wind died.

Meanwhile, Gary on the MG 14, after unjaming his main sheet, had turned around and headed back to see if he could assist the ailing cats. With minor damage to one of the cats who had eventually made it to shore. Loi getting his up with help from the safety boat, all headed back to shore in a very light north westerley.

Later that afternoon, the breeze settled in the west as the boats were packed up and it looked perfect for a sail...that's the way it goes sometimes in Broome.

23rd March - Last Race of The Wet

Last Sunday saw seven boats ready to race the last two races of the Broome Sailing Club's Clark Rubber Wet Season Championship: 4 Cat's and 3 mono hulls graced the Gantheaume beach sands with a 10kt south westerly (as usual for this time of the year) blowing.

With Phil Aagren and Gary Lienert in the BSC Safety RIB out running the short course races, it was set for a great day.

Fist race for the mono hulls saw a daring port tack start from Gary Harding on Okanui, not quite clearing the Dayman/Diss 470.  With Loi in the Laser chasing it was a dash to the first mark.  First around was the 470 soon to me mown down by Okanui with flat cut spinnaker up on what was a quite tight reach. The next lag saw Okanui move further ahead and when rounding the leeward mark, there was work to be done.

With Loi still chasing hard, the 470 and Okanui battled up each of the windward legs where the speed of the 470 was enough to sneak ahead, whilst Okanui would claw the lead back under spinnaker.   In the end the 470 was just able to hold off Gary's Okanui to the finish.

The cat's (who started 5 minutes after the mono hulls) was a chase between the two 5.3 Nacra cats.  Alex was being chased by Stan in both races.  Whilst new comers Andy and Matijn in their recently acquired Arrow cats brought up the rear (after a minor swim).

Second race for the mono hulls was pretty similar to the first with the same result. Likewise the second cat race was also similar, and made for an easier win when Stan and Sean got caught up in a mooring line hanging off a buoy.

2nd February - Inland Cruise

With Loi O'Dore at the helm of the Navy Cadet Bus, 20 departed (and eventually returned!) on a night's cruise and dinner to the Roebuck Plains Roadhouse. Sailing just doesn't happen on the beach for BSC, but also inland. It's dryer and less windy. Nice for a change and it's that opportunity to swap seas stories of could have happened and might have been. It was a great night and we can highly recommend the small drive out of Broome for something different. Photos here.

20th January

A prefect morning greeted 7 boats from BSC on Sunday. There was an unusually light breeze and docile seas after a lumpy Saturday before. With promise of exciting things to come, all rigged their boats. For the first time we had the new 14ft skiff Okanui sailed by Gary Harding and his son Matt joining in the fleet for its first race in Broome. Late to start with missing fuel tank, delayed the time on the water…be in good or bad….there was going to be no missing what was to come.

For the first time BSC ran two separate starts......mono hulls first, followed by the cats. Two races scheduled with a short course as the wind was very light with in coming strong tide making it even more tricky. With a slight bias to port, the start was won by the new boy on Okanui closely followed by Phil and Loi on the Fireball…Silver Surfer. T the first mark all boats were very, very close and over the next couple of off wind legs, the lead swapped between all three boats. With one lap to go, it was anyone’s race…..and it proved to be one of the closest races yet.

First blood went to Okanui ….7seconds in front of John’s Blue Chip Impulse, then 28 seconds later came Phil and Loi on Silver Surfer…..what a race of changing fortunes.

In the meantime the breeze had continued to lighten and the cats had started their first race, but as fate would have it there would only be one finisher… Finistere sailed by Stan Best and his crew Andrew. With the tide and lack of wind the others were destined not to complete the short course. With menacing sky building up north and moving down the beach, the decision was left up to the individual skippers whether they wanted to do a second race. The cat skippers were either persevering to finish the first race or deciding to call it a day and dodge the incoming weather.

As always, the calm before the storm was obvious. The race would be to get the last race in BEFORE the proverbial hit the fan. The second mono hull race was to be one triangle only. Down to two starters, the Impulse and Gary’s Okanui, it was painstakingly slow up the first leg. With one eye behind us watching what was developing over land and up north, wondering if we would get a race in before the storm came. Thunder and lightning in the distance grew closer, louder and the atmosphere felt like it was about to explode. With Gary’s Okanui first at the weather mark, the decision was to go straight back to the start finish and try to get a race in and back on shore safely.

We almost made it. With a last minute dash and some downwind speed from the Impulse, the second race was taken out by John on the Impulse and then the wind swung to the east in a flash as it did on Saturday and came in with a bang. Newcomers to BSC safety RIB, Andy and Ado, were about to get baptised in a big way. The call was to keep an eye on our two new sailers to the club on the Arrow cats, Andy Greig and Martiju McKenna. In a flash one was over and drifting toward the outer Ganth reef, whilst all others were rocketing back to home base.

Rain, wind and a building surf greeted everyone who made it back to shore. Exciting times and not for the faint hearted. Meanwhile the BSC RIB was working on recovering the Arrow cat drifting towards the outer reef. In poor visibility and in the hands of one of our new RIB drivers, Andy ably assisted by our Stan, the boat was taken under tow and slowly dragged sideways to shore. Great team effort by all BSC skippers, crew and Beach Marshall Caroline on the radio got all boats in through the surf, rain and wind safely with no-one hurt and all boats in one piece. There was a flurry of feverish activity to get the ailing Arrow catamaran on shore safely without damaging boat or people, but due to all the camaraderie of BSC members.

14th January

First ever Broome Schools Sail Training about to happen. This year BSC will run the first ever Schools training program and it will commence at the start of the dry season sailing calender, Sunday 21st April at 8am, for St Mary's School.

The course runs for 4 weeks on the Sundays when the Broome tide allows good beach access. Sport Co-ordinator at St Mary's, Mark Dellar, has been working with BSC Sail Trainer John Dayman to put together the inaugural Level 1 Sail Training program for St Marys.  John says, "Our ultimate aim would be to include Sailing in the Kimberley Cup and involve all schools. Resident Broome schools could do the level one and other Kimberley Cup participants could send their students down at Easter or a term break to do the level one sail training. The Kimberley Cup event could then entail running all Level One's through Level 2 and culminate in a round robin competition between the schools. This would be a first for the Kimberley and indeed maybe even country WA." John goes on to say "We have such ideal conditions for learning to sail and with the addition of the 6 Pacer training yachts recently donated by Lawson Klopper, BSC has been running successful training for over two years now."

Parents at St Marys senior are invited to encourage their teenagers(12 years plus) to register with Mark Dellar on return for first term, or email John Dayman and get their name down. The course was going to be run for St Mary's late in 2012, but with BSC racing taking a heavy toll on the volunteers, it ran out of steam. But 2013 is new and all go for BSC and teenagers at Broome High Schools.

23rd December - Summer Series Race 3 & 4

Yet another perfect day greeted the intrepid Broome Sailing Club competitors the last sunday before Christmas.
Five boats turned up for racing including the Chapman family and all their newly qualified juniors. For them is was going to be two on for one race and then swap over crew for the second race, whilst the team on the water in the Safety Boat were able to assist in the starts and mark laying and retrieval. It's great experience for the juniors to see and experience all aspects of sailing including the actual running of the race.
The first race turned out to be a bit short and at a blistering pace it was all over in just over 34 minutes. With 3-4 minute gaps between Alex's cat, the Dayman-Diss 470 and then Loi on the Laser. I think Loi is learning quickly that sailing the Laser is hard yakka, but great fun.
The next race was lengthened as the breeze had snuck up a few knots.....and with the 470 pulling out of the race with crew problems, it was left upto Alex and Loi to take the money. Whilst the yardstick handicap results haven't been calculated as yet, my money would be on Loi. For once he had no capsizes and keeping the Laser upright makes a huge difference. He was flying downwind and only had one anxious moment on the gybe mark that I saw. But he survived and fought on and I think it will pay dividends.
So overall in the series to date, Loi will probably be doing pretty well with two races on every month through the wet, we still have 8 to go. Plus with Christmas over and done and life getting back to normal, we expect to see more BSC members on the water making the most of the great weather we get at this time of the year.

25th November - Summer Series Race 1 & 2

Wet and exhiliarating start to The Wet for Broome Sailing Club.   Four boats left the beach in a momentous race series....the first time Broome Sailing Club has ever run Wet Season races.

The breeze was a pleasant 12-14kts with a building, lumpy, Broome swell. Competing were John and Caroline on their 470, Alex and Meika on the Nacra cat, Gary Harding by himself on a Pacer and Loi on the Laser.

After two capsizes before the start of the first race from Loi getting a handle on the tricky sailing of a Laser, all boats started on time and were away.  It was fast racing and once again Loi experienced some exciting times with another 6 capsizes (!) during the first race.  He was going to be exhausted by the end of the second...... Over the line the Alex's cat was first home followed by the 470 and then not far behind was Gary in the club Pacer....knowing this, he was going to do well on the yardstick handicap which is what the series will be decided on over the coming months.

So after yet another capsize from Loi on the Laser, all boats finally started a shorter second race as the breeze has risen a few knots and everyone was tiring.  As the cat was late to the start this time, after a very close start by the remaining three boats the 470 jumped to the lead and was never headed.  Revelling in the heavier conditions and without even using the spinacker, the 470 was a clear winner over the line for the second race.  Gary and Loi having had enough half way through the second race headed back to the beach.

Tired and wet all back on the beach with minimal fuss and a great days sailing was had by all, who agreed that this wet season sailing is going to be some of the best sailing we have had.  Breeze and seas to play in make it so much more fun to be out there enjoying the real breeze that Broome has to offer. On handicao yardstick both races went to the Dayman 470 and as predicted the Pacer of Gary Harding hot on their heels.
